Federico Students Go Down Under

Foreign study is typically not something that is available for students who are going to school to get a cosmetology license, however Federico Beauty Institute is proud to offer students opportunities as well as experiences that they will not have any other place. Nine Federico students enjoyed an experience that they will always remember last December, when they went to Australia to study at two Pivot Point International schools for a week.

The trip started with a 15-hour flight from Los Angeles on December 5, 2009. Upon their arrival in Australia on the sixth of December, the pupils immediately set off to see renowned Melbourne landmarks. The initial day was spent being acquainted with Melbourne generally, with some time in the Immigration Museum included. Once they had registered at the Travelodge Southbank in Melbourne and had done some sightseeing, the pupils dined at the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant. This restaurant is actually a functional tramcar that rides around the city of Melbourne as those aboard dine on a delicious 5-course meal.

The second day in Melbourne included a safari trip in the Serendip Open Range Sanctuary and an excursion to Brisbane National Park. Students got to see native animals like emus, koalas, and kangaroos. More than 150 avian breeds reside within this sanctuary, and you will find the most expansive wildflower area at the National Park. On their last full day in Melbourne, students spent their morning at Pivot Point Academy where they studied cuts, colors and hair extensions. In the afternoon, they explored the city.

The students flew from Melbourne to the largest city in Australia, Sydney, on December 9th. Day one in Sydney featured a trip to the Sydney Aquarium, which houses more than 12,000 animals. In the evening the students stayed in the Park Regis Sydney hotel and had a pleasurable dinner at the restaurant "I'm Angus." The following day, students had fun on a tour of the city that consisted of the Town Hall, Queen Victoria Building, Botanic Gardens, Bondi Beach, as well as additional locations. Following a lunch cruise through Sydney Harbor, students were able to tour the famed Sydney Opera House, where they learned about the history and architecture of the building.

Friday and Saturday are the days that students went to the Pivot Point Academy to learn how to cut and color from Australian teachers. There were student workshops and long hair demonstrations on Saturday.

The last sightseeing outing was a hike along the path known as “Bronte to Bondi.” The path takes hikers a couple of miles across a coastline path lined with rocky cliffs and shores. The view was marvelous and the pupils also got to see native stone carvings. The last stop was the most famous beach in Australia, Bondi Beach. They ate dinner while looking over the beach at Bondi Trattoria. When they were done with their meal, the students returned to the hotel to pack and prepare for their trip home.

They all returned on the thirteenth of December, eager to tell the other Federico students here about what they had done and learned, and eager to show off their snapshots. This was the initial trip in a series of study abroad experiences that will be available to students of the Federico Beauty Institute. Come back to learn about future outings!
