Honoring National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was held in October, and Federico Beauty Institute students, employees, and cohorts worked together with AJF Salon to support this good endeavor. The Federico family was covered in pink and was ready for the Locks of Love cut-a-thon, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, and our own Casual for a Cause day.
Hairstylists from AJF Salon and Federico Beauty Institute took part in a Locks of Love cut-a-thon on October 15th. Sacramento Firefighters from Local 522 were growing their hair the mandatory 10 inches, and it was time for them to get a haircut! Our stylists trimmed the hair of thirty two members of the community, including six firefighters. We sent all of the trimmed hair to Locks of Love, which helps children who are experiencing medical hair loss by making them hairpieces.
The American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of Greater Sacramento was held on October 17th. AJF Salon, Federico Beauty Institute, and all of their staff were on hand to show their support once again. The group of stylists and friends and family included roughly thirty individuals. The 5k walk generated more than $300,000 for the American Cancer Society to continue looking for a cure and give services to those battling breast cancer. The fourth biggest company team was the AJF Salon, who raised $4,080!
The final effort for the month of the Federico Beauty Institute students was a casual dress day - Casual for a Cause. Students could wear casual clothing for the day upon making a small donation to the cause. Everybody added something pink to their outfit for the day to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Casual for a Cause was supported by forty of our students, who managed to raise $275. They gifted this money to the AJF Salon Making Strides team.
The Federico family has a very personal interest in breast cancer awareness and support. Jeremy, Joe and Adam Federico's mother, Anne, began her battle with breast cancer in 1981. Anne was determined to help others affected by breast cancer. For 22 years, she was there to give support and encouragement. She was instrumental in a program that provided wigs to women undergoing treatment. Sadly Anne was diagnosed with breast cancer again in 2003 and passed away in 2005 after a long battle with the disease.
The Federico family, Federico Beauty Institute, and AJF Salon are involved in many community activities. Their support of the American Cancer Society and Locks and Love demonstrate their strong commitment and desire to "pay it forward." Federico Beauty Institute students also support Anne Federico's Wig Bank program. The students continued to help those in need with wigs and styling services, in Anne's honor.
