State Board Exam Preparation

Prior to seeking work as a successful professional in the beauty industry, you must pass the State Board Exams in California. Federico Beauty Institute's programs contain examination preparation classes to offer students a chance to be successful right from the start.

When the Cosmetology and Esthetician courses are over, students take almost a week to study for the State Board exams. Throughout the course of this week, students are taken through all parts of the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology tests, including timed examination drills as well as written practice exams.

In order that students obtain a real understanding of this exam, participation is necessary in this preparatory course, as explained by cosmetology instructor Tee Mason.

"It is necessary that students test their skills on mannequins in the class while their teacher watches them, and grades their performance" says Mason. She states that this set resembles the state board assessment as closely as it can.

Federico Beauty Institute wants to do everything it can to give students the confidence and skills they need to pass. By providing students with a relaxed atmosphere with trustworthy teachers and classmates close by, Federico helps students to concentrate successfully on finishing the content of the test while nearly taking away the jittery feelings that accompany it.

Students are encouraged to pre-apply for the state exam by Federico, in addition to the offering of preparatory classes. When a student pre-applies, they may take the exam two weeks post graduation, during which the practice and information is still current in their minds. By taking state exams right after they graduate, students may report higher scores and have better post-graduation prospects.

If students don't sign up in advance for the exam, or want to study more, they have the chance to take the Federico preparation class again until they are comfortable enough to finish the exam. If students do not feel ready for it, they are not pressured after the prep week to take the state exam. Federico encourages those who are nervous to take the prep course again, even if they have already graduated, to feel comfortable and succeed.

Mason states, "It is suggested to the students that they bring their model to school after they have completed the state board class, to practice and be evaluated, and to make sure they are comfortable with the test so that they will do well on it."

There are two separate parts to the official state test. While taking the practical test, students have to finish various activities in a certain timeframe while the test administrator watches them and grades their work. Each service is carried out on a model which the pupil brings to the testing site. The latter half of the exam is the written part, which includes 100 questions. Some of the questions are of a more scientific nature, such as on hygiene or chemistry, and some are about care of the hair and services.

Students will be well educated at Federico Beauty Institute and have a chance to progress in their new careers when they first start. With state examination training included in the basic curriculum, Federico students get guidance which puts them at the forefront of the competition, readying them to become the best in the beauty industry.
